Refusing to be Defined by Your Eating Disorder by Nikki Kramer

Just because you have struggled with overcoming an eating disorder DOES NOT MEAN that you have to be identified in terms of your eating disorder. Too often I hear women in early recovery saying that they have lost themselves and can no longer think of anything that defines them other than their eating disorder. Every single one of us at any given time has a choice to begin allowing ourselves to expand our identities by pursuing people, places, and things that are completely separate from our eating disorders. In fact, as Jenni Schaefer mentions in Life Without Ed, it is critical that we go out of our way to disobey our eating disorders and the rules that it has in place for us.

Eating disorders demand that we limit our identities to living within the narrow confines of the outrageously illogical parameters that our eating disorders dictate to us. We, as women who are on the road to recovery, have the choice to tell ED to “take a hike” and start pursuing what makes us happy!! ED will tell you “You cannot go out to eat with those people. Think of a way to get out of it!” You have the choice to tell ED “I want to learn again to enjoy spending time with people and I have the right to go out to lunch with my friends and have a good time!” There are so many things that we can pursue if we will only let ourselves.

Think about some of the things that perhaps you used to enjoy but have given up to some degree because of your eating disorder. Write a list of the people, places, and things that you want to define you and keep in mind that nothing having anything to do with your ED should be a part of your list.

Mirror by BarlowGirl

Hi All,
The following song (Mirror by BarlowGirl) was written and is performed by singer/song-writter Rebbecca Barlow from the band BarlowGirl. She wrote the song as a result of her experiences in living and recovering from an eating disorder.

Jen H. shared this amazing song with me before last week's group and I wanted to share with all of you. Thanks Jen!! I am posting a video of the song that I found on youtube (not original video) and also the lyrics. Check it out, it is awesome! Scroll down so you can see lyrics and watch video. Hit the play button on the center of the screen.

Peace, Hope and Love,

~Lily

Mirror
Mirror, Mirror on the wall,
Have I got it?
'Cause Mirror you've always told me who I am
I'm finding it's not easy to be perfect
So sorry you won't define me
Sorry you don't own me

Who are you to tell me
That I'm less than what I should be?
Who are you? Who are you?
I don't need to listen
To the list of things I should do
I won't try, I won't try

Mirror I am seeing a new reflection
I'm looking into the eyes of He who made me
And to Him I have beauty beyond compare
I know
He defines me

You don't define me, you don't define me

On Mindfulness and Being Connected

Hi all,
We had a great meeting this past Sunday...Our guest speaker, Dr. Cathy Roberts, led us in a very interesting conversation about being connected and present in the moment, with our bodies, with ourselves...before we can even get to the point of genuinely connecting with others...

Mindfulness is paying attention in a very particular way: on purpose, in the present moment and non-judgmentally....fully appreciating and experiencing the moment for what it is, without judgment...

For me, having suffered from an eating disorder and chronic anxiety, I remember constantly judging myself and living "inside my head" like we talked about during our last meeting...disconnected from my body, from what I needed and wanted, from the desires of my heart, from the experience of life...it is so important to practice being still, living in the moment, and being kind to ourselves....

We also talked about how being in recovery does not mean we are never going to stumble or go through hard times, because we all do, that's life...... The difference is that, when we go through hard times and start to fall back into negative behaviors and ways of being, we have the hope, faith, knowledge, tools, experiences and support system to help us get back up and keep on going...stronger than before!

For the next two weeks, experiment and enjoy taking care of yourself, nurturing yourself, staying connected, in the moment, and changing your focus from the negative, to the positive...

Below is the poem we used to close the meeting. Thanks to the folks at http://www.myedhelp.com/ for this awesome piece.

See you on April 22nd!

Peace, Hope and Love,

Lily

AUTOBIOGRAPHY IN FIVE SHORT CHAPTERS
By Portia Nelson

I.
I walk down the street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I fall in
I am lost
I am helpless
...It isn't my fault.
It takes forever to find my way out.

II.
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I pretend I don't see it.
I fall in again.
I can't believe I'm in the same place,
...but, it isn't my fault.
It still takes a long time to get out.

III.

I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I see it is there.
I still fall in
....it.s a habit.
My eyes are open.
I know where I am.
It is my fault.
I get out immediately.

IV.
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I walk around it.

V.
I walk down another street.

On Anxiety

Hi All,

Tonight (March 25th, 2007) we talked about Anxiety, something we can all relate to and experience from time time. We learned about four personality traits that can perpetuate anxiety in our lives. Here they are:

1. Perfectionism ~ The tendency to have expectations about yourself, others, and life that are unrealistically high.

2. The Excessive Need for Approval ~ Comes from an inner sense of feeling flawed or unworthy and can result in ignoring your needs and feelings in order to please others.

3. Tendency to Ignore Physical and Psychological Signs of Stress ~
If you are anxious, preoccupied, worrying, you might be oftentimes “living in your head” and not feel strongly connected with the rest of your body.

4. Excessive Need for Control ~ wanting everything in life to be predictable, to always have all bases covered.

We had some great conversations about which one of these four traits we had to work on in order to learn to manage our anxiety and ways in which we can overcome each of these traits. As always, it was great to be able to connect and relate to the experiences of others and to be reassured that we are not alone..... :-)

There was a reoccurring theme of our need for approval and putting the needs of others before our own. Here are some affirmations that can help us move beyond this and remember that it is ok for us to take care of our needs and the needs of others:

Affirmations for Moving Beyond Co-Dependency (*)

I am learning to take better care of myself.

I recognize that my own needs are important.

It is good for me to take time for myself.

I am finding a balance between my own needs and my concerns for others.

If I take good care of myself, I’ll have more to offer others.

It is O.K. to ask for what I want from others.

I’m learning to accept myself just the way I am.

It is O.K. to say no to others’ demands when I need to.

I don’t have to be perfect to be accepted and loved.

I can change myself, but I accept that I can’t make another person change.

I’m letting go of taking responsibility for other people’s problems.

I respect others enough to know that they can take responsibility for themselves.

I am letting go of guilt when I can’t fulfill other’s expectations.

Compassion toward others is loving; feeling guilty about their feelings or reactions accomplishes nothing.

I am learning to love myself more every day.

*co-dependency: the tendency to put the needs of others
before your own.

note: the source of the material for today's meeting is an awesome book called The Anxiety and Phobia Workbook by Edmund J. Bourne, Ph.D. All these topics are covered in Chapter 11 of the book.

Free to Choose

Here is another great Ralph Marston quote/piece called Free to Choose. I highlighted my favorite line from it in bold print below. For me, getting this and living it was and is a big part of my recovery and my everyday life.

Our future does not have to be an extension of our past.

Remember that every passing moment brings with it the opportunity of a new beginning...

See you all this Sunday at 7:00PM!!!

Peace, Hope and Love,

~ Lily

Free to Choose

You do not have to keep making the same mistakes. You can choose to change.

You do not have to keep being held back by the same fears and insecurities. You have the ability to move forward if you wish.

There is no good reason why you must settle for anything less than the very best that life has to offer. Anything is possible when you put your full commitment and the energy of your life into it.
The past has brought you to where you are, yet it has no power to hold you back. In each moment, you are free to choose your own direction.

Reach within yourself and connect with a guiding purpose that you know is right for you. Allow yourself to fully be the unique and beautiful person you are meant to be.

This day, this moment is a blank canvas upon which you are now able to paint. Fill it with the magnificent splendor that you know is yours to give.

Doing Life Together and The Treasure Within

We just had our 6th meeting tonight. It was so great to see all of the faces from last week and to welcome some new friends into our group. I wanted to acknowledge all of you again for taking an active role in your recovery, and for your willingness to not only help yourself but to encourage others by sharing your story and/or also listening to the stories shared.

I told someone I really admire about the support group (Troy Gramling from FRC) and he emailed me something I thought was so true and so awesome: "It is so important to have people to do life with who have been where we are..."

As promised, below is the The Treasure Within, that we used to close the group tonight, since I read it from my blackberry (smile). Nikki, thank you so much for sharing it with us!

Have a great two weeks everyone! See you on Sunday March 25th, 2007 at 7:00PM. I will post more before then. Remember, if you need us, we are just a blog, and email or a phone call away.

Peace, Hope and Love,

Lily

The Treasure Within

You are the person you choose to be. So choose to be the person who fulfills and brings to life the values you hold most dearly.

Today is your opportunity to express yourself to the world through the life you live and the actions you take. The challenges of this moment provide a rich canvas upon which you can paint the highest vision you have.

Listen to the yearnings of your heart and keep pointing yourself in their direction. By focusing on what is truly meaningful, you will cause much real value and richness to spring forth from the life you live.

Choose to glide right past the shallow concerns that hold so many people back. Keep your eye on the big picture, and create new positive substance as each moment passes.

Go beyond merely appearing to be happy, and dive into the authentic joy of making a positive difference. Give the best that you have to life, and you'll find each day to be even more fulfilling than the last.

There is a treasure within you that is yearning to weave itself into the fabric of life. Go ahead and let it come shining through.

From Hope to Possibility to Choice and Powerful Living

Hi all!

Greetings from the ANAD Broward County Chapter Team (left to right in this picture: Nikki, Sarah, and Lily) !!!

So we just had our latest meeting this Sunday, February 25th at our usual meeting place (Flamingo Road Church in Cooper City, FL).

It was one of our best meetings to date! We reminded each other that yes there is hope for recovery, and it is possible and awesome to have a happy, healthy and full life. But we didn't stop there, we took it further than just "hoping for someday..." It is in the healthy, positive, constructive choices we make everyday, that we can, step by step, walk our way towards full recovery...it doesn't matter how small of a step we take in the beginning, how small the goal...small steps and small goals will give us the courage to take more risks, and larger strides towards happiness, well-being and reaching our potential....

I remember that when I was just beginning my recovery, I was so scared, and used to think...how am I going to get through three meals and two snacks per day for the next 365 days of the year??? And the answer for me was: one day at a time, one meal at a time...same as we have to do in the beginning stages of many other addictions.

Are we going to make mistakes and maybe struggle sometimes? Yes, we all do! And that is ok! It's part of life! We just need to learn from our mistakes, get back up and keep on going...

Thanks so much to Jeff for visiting with us and sharing some great insight on the importance of the choices we make, the people we do life with, and to always remember that it's what's inside that counts...

Hope to see you all at our next meeting (Sunday, March 11th, 2007 at 7:00PM)...

Peace, Hope and Love,

Lily

Imagine Me

We have been meaning to post this song for a while. It was the song we used to end our first group meeting back in December...

A friend of mine heard it on the radio while driving to work (very early one morning) a couple of days before the first ANAD meeting back in December....I had been looking for an inspirational closing for the first meeting, and this one just came at the perfect time...

My friend was so excited when she heard the lyrics!!!! Thought it would be perfect for our group, she called me very early that day to share it with me...(thanks Nanette!!)

Hope to see you this Sunday. ~ Lily

Imagine Me
by Kirk Franklin

Imagine me
Loving what I see when the mirror looks at me cause I
I imagine me
In a place of no insecurities
And I'm finally happy cause
I imagine me

Letting go of all of the ones who hurt me
Cause they never did deserve me
Can you imagine me?
Saying no to thoughts that try to control me
Remembering all you told me
can you imagine me?
Over what my mama said
And healed from what my daddy did
And I wanna live and not read that page again

Imagine me, being free, trusting you totally finally I can...
Imagine me
I admit it was hard to see
You being in love with someone like me
But finally I can...
Imagine me

Being strong
And not letting people break me down
You won't get that joy this time around
Can you imagine me?
In a world (in a world) where nobody has to live afraid
Because of your love fears gone away
Can you imagine me?

Letting go of my past
And glad I have another chance
And my heart will dance
'Cause I don't have to read that page again

Can you imagine me?

One Day at A Time

Hi All,

Jayne made a great comment on her last post (see her responses to "Willingness"...) Jayne said she's been trying hard to focus on the here and now...

That was one of the big changes that I made in my life....in the midst of my depression and my eating disorder, I used to look at the past with constant regret and looked at the future with fear...so much that I didn't enjoy nor really live my here and now....
Now, I take one day at a time, and enjoy and do my best every day, because all I have is right now. Living the best "right now" I can will make for good yesterdays....and planning for the future, taking action, looking forward to what is ahead instead of passively worrying.....and remembering to take one day at a time, makes for great tomorrows...

I read a quote today that I loved and I say good bye with it tonite....

"Anyone can give up, it's the easiest thing in the world to do. But to hold it together when everyone else would understand if you fell apart, that's true strength." ...not sure who it is by, but I really like it.
Peace, Hope and Love...
Lily

Willingness

Hi all !!!

The topic of willingness was awesome this Sunday! It brought out some great conversations of courage, hope and resolve. It made me remember how important it is to take an active role in our recovery!!!!! Great reminder question to ask ourselves often. What are we willing to do in order to stay in the path towards recovery? What are we willing to let go? What are we willing to do in order to have a life that is full, healthy, happy and with purpose?

It is definitely worth being willing, it takes some courage but it is sooooooo worth it!!!!!!! :-) I am so happy now that I am healthy and so glad I took the risk to be willing and get better. It has opened the doors to many wonderful people (smile), places, experiences and opportunities, and I have the honor now of partnering with wonderful people like all of you!!!!!

PS: Thank you so much for posting the first official blog comment Jayne!!!

Walking in Someone Else's Shoes

Greetings everybody!

Can you believe it is 2007 already? Seems like the holidays flew by. We will be having our 2nd official ANAD meeting on Sunday, January 14th, 2007 at Flamingo Road Church in Volunteer Central (room 127). Check earlier posts for directions to FRC.

Several days after our first meeting, my mom had an accident. She fell in the garage from 3 feet high. It was very scary. She was not fractured which is amazing. I wanted to share one thing that happened while I was taking care of her after the fall. The first night after the fall, she was so sore and in so much pain. I really felt for her. Her blood pressure was low, she was dehidrated and she had not eaten. I was so concerned because she had not wanted to eat, and kept insisting that she eat something. I was so worried and all of a sudden I understood, what my mom must have felt like when I used to not want to eat. The following day she started eating normally. It was just one night and I was soooooo worried for her and soooooo concerned...and I just thought wow!! She had to watch me skip meals for several years, not just one night... she must have worried so much...
Just a thought, next time someone you love shows concern and/or asks that you eat, the choice is up to you, and you might not be ready, but before you get upset at them....just remember that they love you, care about you, and try to imagine what it would be like to be in their shoes...It happened to me this holiday season with my mom, just for one night (one meal), and it was an eye opening experience...

Hope to see you on Sunday!

Peace, hope and love,

Lily
